SOLO SESSION

..The intention to create this music material grew in SOLO central Java as i studied there the traditional music heritage. I compiled a very personal music schedule of my audio experiences in Indonesia and Nepal. Back in Germany emerged the idea of composing music in one hand in a pictural and narrative manner and the other hand compatible with a popular music broadcast...
Altogether the 25 minute album describes a story being abroad, remembering old lovers, getting a culture clash, unlearning prejudice and actually taking a fancy to otherness.
..
I tried to create a suggestive music theater which acts like a radio drama with persona, space and story. The interest here lays in the embodiment of images out of aurality. Like motion picture music without pictures. The listener has to create his own images to the acoustical motion and hence the personalized emotional progression. It should affect the listener in a synaesthesia kind of way. My concern in this whole project was to bring the music into narrative. And ..PIECE OF WORK.. is just one example...


..Concerning .. ..PIECE OF WORK.. .. i recorded some traditional Javanese music texture and used samples of it to create that fluffy basic rhythm. The eventual arrangement based on the lyrics. The lyrics have a certain progression which i tried to transform into musical text. Out of the story ought arise a feeling of relieve in the end of the song. Originally recorded in Bhaktapur / Nepal the rain drop sequence is primarily intended to be used as a break-through to the described agony in the song. In the refrain there is a stanza .. waiting for the rain to wash away the pain .. it'll be fulfilled in the second refrain but not by a simple overdub. I sampled the rain sound into an appropriate beat according the six eighth meter to the song. After a while of ..raining in time.. the sample becomes the real atmo again and culminates in the following song ..LAVATION..
. Another example for revelation gives the merging vocal part in the final of ..PIECE OF WORK.....

.. To put it in a nutshell i want to suggest a way of looking to reality, to listening habits, authenticity and aesthetic experience and want to create a music theater or staged music...

SOLO SESSION

Durch das Studium der Vergleichenden Musikwissenschaft in Berlin und das Darmasiswa-Programm des Indonesischen Bildungsministerium bin ich zu einem überwältigenden Aufenthalt in Solo / Java / Indonesien gekommen. Ein Jahr durfte ich am Konservatorium ISI-Surakarta studieren. Vollgestopft mit Instrumenten, Feldaufnahmen und neuen Hörgewohnheiten kam ich nach Berlin zurück.

Zwischen 2007 – 2009 wurde das Album mit vielen Freunden und ohne Budget am HeimPC produziert. Im Frühjahr 2010 wurde das Album schließlich gemastert und veröffentlicht.

Solo Session heißt es. Der Titel beschreibt nicht nur meine solistischen Fade und den Aufenthalt in der Stadt Solo auf Java, sondern auch den Session-haften Charakter der Produktion insgesamt, in deren zweijährigen Verlauf ich unzählige Proberäume sowie ungewöhnliche Settings an verschiedensten Schauplätzen der Welt besuchte.

Rausgekommen ist ein ganz persönliches Sound-Logbuch. Es zeigt in seinem Verlauf die Modulation meiner ästhetische Erfahrung. Von anfänglicher Skepsis gegenüber der Musikkultur Javas über Neugierde bis zum Verständnis spiegelt das Album die Erlebnisse wider im Ausland zu sein, Verflossenen nachzutrauern, einem Kulturschock zu erliegen, Vorurteile abzulegen und tatsächlich gefallen an der Andersartigkeit von Kultur – und in meinem Falle von Musikkultur – zu finden, kurzum: die ästhetischen Paradigmen abzulegen und sich der neuen Situation zu stellen.

Zwei Jahre hat's gedauert zu sample'n, zu texten, zu arrangieren, zu produzieren, zu mischen, Termine zu koordinieren, Petitionen zu schreiben, um beispielsweise das Instrumentenensemble der indonesischen Botschaft nutzen zu dürfen u.s.w.
